New Build House
Due to Complete 2018
Stephen was Project Architect for this house at Gresford Architects.
This corner site, in suburban Harpenden, is currently home to a modest 2-storey house in need of a major refurbishment. In 2016, the clients purchased this house with the stated ambition of rebuilding it to meet the needs of their growing family.
The unusual, sloping site presented a number of opportunities, not least of which was the ability to create a three-storey house that only appeared to be two-storeys on either elevation. Many of the utilitarian spaces were sunken into the landscape, providing the accommodation they needed while minimising the apparent size of the house.
The materials were carefully chosen to balance a desire for modernity with the need to blend into the boilerplate suburban streetscape. Warm timber, dry stone and zinc were used to match the tones of the neighbourhood's brick and slate. This project has recently been submitted for planning, and we look forward to its successful completion in the coming year.
